“It’s a little overwhelming but so great to be a part of it”
Wake Canada’s Junior Development Team is taking the scene by storm and promises to be the future of our sport. In this feature series, we will be introducing you to these up and coming athletes so you can see what they’re bringing to the table.
Who better to start off with than BC Native Tyler Lindsay? This guy radiates positive energy and passion for his sport so he’s guaranteed to get you stoked. Check out our interview with Tyler below.
We’ll start with your name, age, and where you’re from.
My name’s Tyler Lindsay, 18 years old, living and riding in Shawnigan Lake BC.
Do you have any nicknames?
T.Li (tea-lie), crooked arrow, hippy boy, I respond to anything.
Do you remember the first time you ever went wakeboarding?
No, but I remember getting my first wakeboard on Christmas and standing there in the living room with it on my feet, so exciting.
Favourite trick to do?
Anything wrapped or with a poked out grab, big 180s. If it looks cool I love it!
A trick you haven’t mastered yet but hope to?
Hopefully every trick!
Boat or cable, and why?
Boat, I have a water skiing background and it’s more traditional. It flows a lot better for me.
Favourite park to ride at?
Probably Valley Wake Park because it’s one of two in BC!
What set-up do you ride?
The Byerly AR2 and system bindings. I just love how simple and awesome Byerly’s boards are.
Worst crash ever?
Probably when I was 12; I accidentally did a railey showing off my heel side air and caught a back edge. Never showboat! Or a couple of years ago when I snapped my board, ripped the inserts out, and got a concussion on a back roll.
Have you ever considered quitting?
With anything, you go through good and bad times, there’s time where I want to throw my board in the lake and drive away, but it’s important to never stop chasing the dream!
Favourite music to get you stoked?
Anything berry aggressive or Fergie.
Any sponsors yet?
Shuswap ski and board. They’re awesome!
Have you been wakeboarding anywhere outside of Canada? If so, what was it like?
Ya! I’m currently in Georgia for American nationals, then spending some time in Florida. I stay with Trevor Hansen lots; he’s awesome! Nice to be in warm water.
Who’s your biggest inspiration in life?
Everyone! Everyone has done awesome unique things.
Who’s your favourite rider?
I love watching any of the style kings, Aaron Ratty, JD Webb, Trever Maur. They just make it look so good.
Obviously my parents! This wouldn’t be possible without a solid foundation.
What do you do all winter?
Shovel snow, tend to the igloo, work, workout, and I ride year round.
How does it feel when you introduce new people to the world of wakeboarding?
It is so awesome to see someone get stoked on wakeboarding for the first time. A lot of people don’t know what the actual sport is and it’s incredible to show people.
How does it feel to be called the “future” of Canada’s wakeboarding scene?
It’s a little overwhelming but so great to be a part of it!
What’s next for you in the upcoming year?
Hitting up a couple of contests, spending a couple of months in Florida, and then seeing where I end up!
